In Vitro Maturation (IVM) Pilot Study

Our Victorian-first pilot study of CAPA-IVM, led by Dr Violet Kieu, A/Prof Kate Stern and Senior Researcher Alexandra Harvey, is an innovative treatment that uses less hormone stimulation, with the aim of reducing treatment burden and lowering the risk of OHSS in women at higher risk.

Melbourne IVF is offering selected patients the opportunity to take part in a new research study using In Vitro Maturation (IVM). Women with a high ovarian reserve under the age of 37 years are welcome to register their interest.

This treatment reduces IVF hormone injections from 2 weeks to just 1-2 days. “Normally it takes 10 to 13 days of hormone injections to grow a pool of eggs,” explains A/Prof Kate Stern. “With in vitro maturation, you have either zero, or only one or two days of injections, so you don’t develop the bloating, increased risk of clots, and it doesn’t take the same time, energy, stress and trauma.”

In Vitro Maturation is a new, gentler approach that may benefit cancer patients, women with PCOS, and those who find traditional hormone treatments challenging, offering different options to help make fertility care safer and more accessible.

Who is eligible to participate?

Women with a high ovarian reserve aged under the age of 37 years are welcome to register their interest.

Who will deliver my fertility care?

Your own fertility specialist will continue to guide your treatment and any future embryo transfers, while the egg collection is performed by a specialised research team trained in this technique by international experts. By participating, you may access a lower-intensity treatment approach while helping build expertise at Melbourne IVF and improve care for future patients.
