Melbourne IVF WELCOMES NATIONAL ART SECTOR REFORM
Melbourne IVF welcomes the outcomes of the Health Ministers’ meeting held on 12 September 2025, which mark a significant step forward in strengthening public confidence in Australia’s Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) sector.
The Ministers’ decision to transition to an independent accreditation model, led by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC), is an important reform that aligns with Melbourne IVF's longstanding advocacy for an independent regulator, greater transparency, accountability, and national consistency in fertility care.
We also strongly support measures that increase transparency for donor-conceived people such as the establishment of a national donor conception registry.
Virtus Health has consistently called for the transformation of the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC) into an independent regulatory body and the development of uniform national IVF laws. We are pleased to see these priorities reflected in the Ministers’ communique and look forward to contributing to the design and implementation of the new framework.
We also welcome the commitment to national engagement with consumers, donors, and donor-conceived people. Inclusive, co-designed policy development is essential to addressing emerging concerns such as informal sperm donation and donor limits.
As the reforms progress toward implementation by January 2027, Melbourne IVF will continue to work closely with governments, regulators, and the broader community to ensure that Australia’s fertility sector remains world-leading in safety, innovation, and patient outcomes.
We commend the Health Ministers for their leadership and look forward to supporting this transition to a strengthened and more transparent ART system.
