Let's Make It Your Year - Week 4

We’re on the home stretch so let’s get a clear understanding on where to from here.

Infertility is a medical condition affecting 1 in 6 couples, so it’s important to know when to ask for help. If you are under 35 years of age, we recommend that you seek advice from your GP or a fertility specialist after 12 months of trying. If you are over 35 years of age, we recommend seeing a fertility specialist after 6 months.

However, if at any point within the recommended 6 to 12 months you are worried about your fertility, do not delay seeking the advice of your GP or a fertility specialist. Trust your instincts and seek help.

Now, let's look at where you can go to for advice.

Visit your GP

GPs are often the first point of contact for anyone wishing to conceive as they are able to carry out many of your pre-pregnancy screening tests. They play an important role in the preliminary investigations if you’re having trouble falling pregnant.

Typically, your GP will make an initial assessment based on how long you’ve been trying to conceive, the length of your menstrual cycle, pregnancy history, and determine ovulation. They will also order a semen analysis for your partner.

GPs may even recommend some lifestyle changes, depending on you and your partner’s circumstances. For example, dietary changes and exercising may be recommended, particularly if your BMI is outside a healthy range.

If your GP determines that your situation warrants further investigation, they may refer you to a specialist.

Here are some suggestions for discussions you can have with your GP:

  • How long you have been trying to conceive naturally
  • How long they recommend you keep trying naturally
  • What fertility tests they advise you to take
  • If you've had a previous STD, termination or miscarriage
  • If you know of, or suspect that you have a common fertility issue such as PCOS, and
  • If you are feeling stressed or anxious about not falling pregnant

Book an appointment with one of our fertility specialists

Each of our fertility specialists brings their unique expertise and understanding to Melbourne IVF. Your fertility specialist will play an integral role in your treatment and care, performing your procedures including egg collection and embryo transfer.

If you would like to book a consultation with, or have any questions about any of our fertility specialists, you can contact our team on 1800 111 483.

It’s important to remember that seeing a fertility specialist is not a fast track to IVF. A fertility specialist can conduct simple tests and work with you to find out what’s happening, explore all your options and help you fall pregnant sooner.

Book a Fertility Check Up

Melbourne IVF fertility specialists are here to help you take your first step to becoming a parent. Sometimes you just need the right advice to help guide you along the way.

Our Fertility Check Up will help you to understand the factors affecting your fertility with a few simple tests. For $195 –  you will have a consultation with a fertility specialist, an AMH test and a semen analysis.
