Previous Pregnancies

If you have ever been pregnant in the past, this is a good indication that you will be able to conceive in the future – even if that pregnancy wasn’t carried to term. There is no evidence that a previous termination of pregnancy, unless there were complications, will compromise your fertility potential.

However, if you have conceived naturally in the past, there is no guarantee that it will happen as easily in your current relationship.

There are a few factors that will affect your ability to conceive again after a previous pregnancy:

  • If you have a different partner,
  • Your age, and your partner’s age.

Unexplained secondary fertility can occur, whether you are still with the same partner or with someone new. Contact us if you are concerned that this could be an issue.

Conceiving after a termination

Having a termination will not affect your chances of having a baby in the future, if there were no complications with the procedure. Problems such as injury to the uterus or cervix or serious infection as a result of the termination are extremely unlikely.

If you are now ready to have a child, it is a good sign that you were able to conceive in the past.

Conceiving after a miscarriage

Miscarriage, or a pregnancy loss before 20 weeks, occurs in at least one in six pregnancies. While it is heartbreaking at the time, many couples will go on to have a baby. If you experience recurrent miscarriage, more than two consecutive miscarriages, we can help with investigation into the possible causes, advice and treatment.
