After your initial consultation with your fertility specialist, a treatment plan will be recommended depending on the diagnosis made and your individual chance of conception. However, wherever possible Melbourne IVF aims to begin with the least invasive option first, before moving onto more complicated treatments such as IVF.
Some examples of simple and more advanced techniques are outlined below. Procedures vary from time to time and your own treatment may differ in some details.
Simple Techniques
Ovulation Induction (OI):
Ovulation induction is used when a woman is either producing only low levels of hormones that enable her to conceive, or is not ovulating at all. Treatment involves taking hormone stimulating medication (normally oral) to maximise the chance of conception.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI):
IUI is commonly used to treat women who have normal healthy Fallopian tubes and when more complex treatments are not indicated. Treatment involves placing partner's concentrated sperm inside the womb near the time of ovulation. IUI is also used in treatment involving using frozen embryos.
Advanced Techniques
In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF):
Mature eggs are collected from the ovary after ovulation stimulation, placed with sperm in the laboratory, and later one or two of the resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI):
The treatment process is the same as IVF except for the way in which the egg is fertilised. With ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg to achieve fertilisation. This method is very successful in overcoming male or sperm factors.
