Melbourne IVF provides a sperm donor program where the donor is either Recipient Recruited (known to the recipient) or Clinic Recruited (donor is provided by the Clinic and their identity is not known to the recipient).
Availability Clinic Recruited Sperm Donors:
There has been for sometime a severe shortage of clinic recruited donor sperm in Australia and this is unlikely to change in the short term. For this reason Melbourne IVF encourages recipients to recruit their own donor. At present there is no waiting list to access clinic recruited donor sperm, however this may be introduced if required in the future.
Please note due to the shortage of Clinic Recruited Sperm donors, all treatment cycles other than donor insemination using clinic recruited donor sperm will use the ICSI procedure.
Who Can Become A Sperm Donor?
Clinic Recruited Sperm donors are required to be healthy men aged between 25 and 45 years of age. Recipient Recruited sperm donors may be aged outside of these requirements as agreed by the recipients’ treating doctor.
Sperm Donation Process
Donors and partners (if applicable) are required to attend at least 2 counselling sessions to discuss the implications and legal aspects of being a sperm donor and sign consent to donate sperm.
Prior to being accepted as a donor you must attend a medical consultation, undergo a semen analysis to assess the quality of your sperm and screening bloods for infectious diseases and some genetic conditions.
Should you meet the necessary requirements and would like to continue with the donation, the donor is required to attend at least 5 donation appointments. Sperm is then stored and quarantined for six months after which time the donor is required to complete further screening blood tests for infectious diseases. If blood test results are negative the sperm is then cleared for use by the Andrology Department and the Melbourne IVF Fertility Specialist responsible for the donor sperm program.
If you wish to become a sperm donor please contact Melbourne IVF Donor Administration on phone (03) 9473 4428 or by email donor@mivf.com.au to schedule all required appointments.
Donor Sperm Recipient Process
Please schedule a consultation with a Melbourne IVF fertility specialist who will discuss the process, assess your health and arrange any preliminary testing required. If you have a recipient recruited sperm donor it is vital that you contact Melbourne IVF donor administration to schedule counselling appointments, and to provide the donor's contact details.
Recipients and partners (if applicable) must attend at least 2 counselling sessions to discuss the implications of treatment using donor sperm and sign consent to use donor sperm.
If using clinic recruited donor sperm, donor profiles will be sent to the recipient and partner (if applicable) once they have signed the relevant consent form with the counsellor.
Once a clinic recruited donor is selected or in the case of recipient recruited sperm donors cleared for use the recipient may commence their IVF treatment.
