Melbourne IVF East Melbourne is our main fertility clinic, a purpose built consultation, laboratory, procedure room and day surgery facility situated within the Freemason’s Medical Centre.
Located in Suite 10, the nursing, counselling, patient liaison administrator teams, together with the scientific teams incorporating embryology, andrology and endocrinology departments, provide the full spectrum of fertility treatments to patients.

Dr Lyndon Hale
Born in Tasmania and a graduate of Melbourne University, Dr Hale spent two years at the Austin Hospital in the resident training programme before moving to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at The Women’s Hospital for three years specialist training.
After two years in the United Kingdom working as a Registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Peterborough District Hospital and the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Dr Hale returned to the Reproductive Biology Unit at the Royal Women's, where he spent a further three years as Senior Registrar.
In 1995 he obtained the Certificate of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility by examination.
Dr Hale was appointed Medical Director of Melbourne IVF in 2008, and is also Director of the Reproductive Surgery at The Women’s Hospital, and a Board member of the Fertility Society of Australia.

Dr John McBain
Born in Glasgow, Dr John McBain graduated in medicine from Glasgow University and trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Scotland. He came to Australia in 1976 to join the group of doctors researching In Vitro Fertilisation and developed treatment programmes which led to successful and safe super-ovulation for IVF.
Dr McBain served as president of the Fertility Society of Australia in 1991, having been a member of its executive for the previous 6 years. Following the retirement of our founding Chairman, Dr McBain served as Chairman of Melbourne IVF from 1998 to 2005 and was appointed Head of Reproductive Services - ART at The Women’s Hospital in 2002.
Dr McBain campaigned strongly in the mid 1990's for de facto couples to be able to use their own sperm and eggs and infertility treatment in Victoria at a time when it was against the law. He also brought landmark action against the Victorian State Government which allowed access to infertility treatment including IVF for single women and women in gay relationships.
Dr McBain is a member of The Low Cost IVF Foundation which establishes affordable IVF in third world countries and the Associate Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Melbourne. Dr McBain is a Director of Access, Australia’s peak consumer representative body and has been a governor since 1995.
Dr McBain is an Associate of the Board of Melbourne Zoo and in 1983 he led the medical team which brought about the birth of Mzuri, Melbourne Zoo's famous gorilla.

Dr Michael Gronow
After completing his medical studies in Melbourne, Dr Gronow served as Senior Registrar in the Reproductive Biology Unit at The Women’s Hospital, before accepting the position as Fellow in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the William Beaumont Hospital in the United States.
Subsequently, he was Lecturer and Senior Registrar at Kings College School of Medicine in London. Dr Gronow spent four years overseas gaining valuable experience, during which time he was widely published in the area of Reproductive Medicine.
Upon returning to Melbourne, Dr Gronow rejoined the Reproductive Biology Unit at The Women’s Hospital and holds Gynaecology and Obstetric positions at The Women’s Hospital and the Western Hospital in Sunshine.
Dr Gronow is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and a Member of the College in the United Kingdom.

Dr Geoff Clarke
Dr Clarke was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1979, following specialist training at The Women’s Hospital in Melbourne and the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, United Kingdom.
Since then Dr Clarke has practiced privately as a Gynaecologist and Infertility Specialist, and has devoted time as a consultant Gynaecologist at The Women’s Hospital. His public hospital appointments at The Women’s Hospital have included Unit Head in General Gynaecology, and visiting Specialist in Infertility.

Dr Penelope Foster
A graduate of Melbourne University, Dr Penelope Foster served her residency at the Austin Hospital and the Mercy Hospital for Women before travelling overseas to gain further experience.
Dr Foster spent five years in the United Kingdom doing post-graduate medical training, initially at Peterborough District Hospital, followed by an appointment as Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Bristol, where she trained in infertility and IVF.
Dr Foster was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1988, and has been a member of the Senior Medical Staff at The Women’s Hospital since 1989. She currently holds specialist appointments at Reproductive Services in Infertility and Chronic Viral Illness.
Dr Foster has a special interest in chronic viral illness relating to ART treatment, and has clinical responsibility for the embryo biopsy programme (PGD) and the Melbourne IVF donor gamete programme.

Dr Raphael Kuhn
Dr Raphael Kuhn has been active in Reproductive Medicine for many years. In the past he has held the positions of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Melbourne, and Head of Unit of the Department of Gynaecology, at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Head of Unit of Gynaecology at The Women’s Hospital.
He is an examiner for the specialist degree Membership of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (M.R.A.N.Z.C.O.G.)
Dr Kuhn is a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of Australia’s largest medical indemnity insurance company, AVANT. He believes patient safety is paramount.
Dr Kuhn’s special interests include ‘poor responders’ in stimulated IVF treatment cycles, recurrent implantation failure, and uterine fibroids.

Dr Kate Stern
Dr Kate Stern completed university training at the University of Melbourne and underwent Obstetrics and Gynaecology training mostly at The Women’s Hospital, Carlton, with some time also spent at The Mercy Hospital for Women, East Melbourne. She pursued further experience in general O&G in the UK for two years and gained her fellowship to the RANZCOG in 1997.
Dr Stern spent three years doing subspecialty training in Infertility and Reproductive Endocrinology and holds an additional qualification (CREI) for this subspecialty.
Dr Stern is Head of Clinical Research at Melbourne IVF and is head of the Endocrine and Metabolic Service at The Women’s Hospital. She is also medical co-ordinator of the Fertility Preservation, a referral service for patients about to embark on cancer treatment and who wish to be educated about their fertility options.
Dr Stern has completed several research projects evaluating IVF implantation failure and recurrent miscarriage, including two large randomized controlled trials. Her current major interests include polycystic ovarian syndrome, and fertility options after chemo/radiotherapy.

Dr Jim Tsaltas
Dr Jim Tsaltas is a specialist with Melbourne IVF. He is Head of the Gynaecological Endoscopy Unit at Monash Medical Centre and Southern Health. He is currently Vice-President of the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy and Surgery Society (AGES). He is also on the board of the International Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (ISGE). Jim is actively involved in teaching Australian and Overseas Surgeons advanced laparoscopic surgery.
Dr Tsaltas' private IVF practice is at Melbourne IVF in East Melbourne and Waverley Private. His surgical expertise is in advanced endometriosis surgery and advanced laparoscopic surgery. Dr Greg Fox
Dr Greg Fox completed his basic training in gynaecology at The Women’s Hospital before working for two years at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital in the United Kingdom.
Dr Fox began his career in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. He is particularly aware of the challenges associated with providing specialist infertility treatment to patients who live far from the centre of the city, and believes very passionately in the concept of bringing services to the patient, rather than patients to the service.
Dr Fox consults in his East Melbourne rooms but also regularly the Melbourne IVF Ringwood clinic, and practices almost exclusively in the field of reproductive medicine.
Dr Fox is a consultant gynaecologist at The Women’s Hospital Reproductive Services Clinic and a consultant gynaecologist at Melbourne IVF.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists.

Dr Manuela Toledo
Dr Manuela Toledo obtained her medical degree from The University of Melbourne in 1992. She completed her residency at St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne and started specialist Obstetric and Gynaecology training in 1997.
Dr Toledo trained at The Mercy Hospital for Women and The Women’s Hospital in Melbourne and became a Member of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2001. She was awarded her Fellowship of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2004. During this time Dr Toledo also completed a Masters of Reproduction and Genetics at the University of Sydney.

Dr Rachael Knight
Dr Rachael Knight undertook undergraduate medical studies at the University of Tasmania. She trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at The Women’s Hospital and Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne, Victoria and obtained her Fellowship from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Dr Fleur Cattrall
Dr Fleur Cattrall obtained her medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1996 and then completed her residency at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
After specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash Medical Centre she was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
Dr Cattrall undertook further training at Monash IVF, Melbourne IVF and The Women’s Hospital and is now a recognised subspecialist in the field of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI).

Dr Hossam Elzeiny
Dr Elzeiny commenced his Obstetrics and Gynaecology training at The Women’s Hospital in 2001 and obtained membership of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2005 and Fellowship in 2007. Dr Julie Whitehead
Julie studied at Melbourne University for her medical degree. She then trained in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Mercy and The Women's Hospitals before specialising in infertility.
Julie has trained in reproductive medicine through The Women's Hospital and also spent a year training in Bath, UK. She has a Masters in Reproductive Medicine and has an interest in polycystic ovary syndrome. She is one of the specialists in the PCOS clinic at The Women's Hospital.

Dr David Amor
Dr David Amor is a graduate of the University of Melbourne and trained in paediatrics at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. David completed subspecialty training in the field of Clinical Genetics in 2000, and subsequently undertook a PhD in chromosome biology at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, completed in 2004. Since that time David has worked as a consultant clinical geneticist at the Royal Children's Hospital, in Tasmania and at Melbourne IVF.
David has clinical and research interests in chromosome disorders, rare genetic syndromes, genetic disorders associated with infertility, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and the possible association between IVF conception and birth defects. David is currently Head of the Clinical Genetics Research Group at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne. In 2010 he was appointed Director of the Victorian Clinical Genetics Service.
David attends the fortnightly genetics clinic at Melbourne IVF.

Dr Melissa Cameron
Dr Melissa Cameron trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
at the Mercy Hospital for Women, obtaining her Fellowship
in 2006. During her training she undertook a fellowship in
paediatric and adolescent gynaecology at the Royal
Children’s Hospital, followed by a two year fellowship in
advanced laparoscopic gynaecological surgery at the Mercy
Hospital for Women. Over this time she also completed a
Master in Public Health, specialising in women’s health and
fertility issues. She is currently completing a Master of
Reproductive Medicine.
Dr Cameron has a particular interest in fertility issues affecting
women with endometriosis, fibroids and uterine abnormalities.
She is also interested in the impact that adolescent
gynaecological issues may have on future fertility.
Dr Cameron has public appointments at The Womens and
Mercy Hospital for Women and is actively involved in
research into the diagnosis and management of severe

Dr Samuel Soo
Dr Samuel Soo is a Specialist Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at
Epworth Freemasons & St. Vincent's Private Hospital, Frances
Perry House, Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne and

Dr Soo graduated from Monash University in 1997. He began
his training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash Medical
Centre and subsequently at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in
Sydney. He completed his Advanced Gynaecological
Laparoscopic Fellowship with the Sydney West Advanced
Pelvic Surgery unit and following that was appointed Clinical
Superintendent at Westmead Hospital managing High Risk
pregnancies and complicated Gynaecological and Fertility issues.
Dr Soo was then appointed Consultant Obstetrician &
Gynaecologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and at
Westmead Hospital providing Fertility and IVF services at
Westmead Fertility Centre assisting over 1000 couples through
Fertility and IVF treatment before joining Melbourne IVF.
Dr Samuel Soo ran a busy practice in Sydney, becoming the
first Level 6 (highest Level) Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon
at Westmead Hospital, one of the very few in Australia before
relocating to Melbourne where he prefers to raise his young
family. Dr Samuel Soo has earned a reputation as a caring
and understanding doctor who goes out of his way to assist
women & their partners through their fertility journey and
pregnancy, communicating the issues well and often with a
little humour. Among his colleagues he is well respected and
soon developed a reputation for taking on challenging
patients referred from other specialist doctors.
