Donor Program

Melbourne IVF Donor Program

The use of donor gametes (eggs or sperm) and embryos is an option for couples attempting to achieve a pregnancy, when they are unable to use their own for various reasons.  The decision to use donated gametes or embryos will have a significant impact on the people who achieve a family through the donor program and on the children in the family.  The decision to donate may also have a significant impact on the donor and their family.  In order to assist donors and recipients in making a considered and informed decision, Melbourne IVF provides comprehensive support throughout the entire process.

All donor gametes and embryo procedures in Victoria are regulated by the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008.  Under this Act donor treatment may only result in 10 women having children who are genetic siblings. This also includes the donor and any current or former partner of the donor.  Donors may indicate if they wish to donate to fewer than 10 women.

It is an offence under the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008 to intentionally receive or offer to receive payment for donation, other than travel and medical expenses actually incurred.

A Central Register of all donor births is managed by Births, Deaths and Marriages.  This register maintains a permanent record of all parties to the donor conception.   Once a donor conceived person turns 18 years of age identifying information of the donor and offspring may be released (to the donor or offspring) if requested by them.  Consent to the release of identifying information must be obtained from the offspring before this information is provided to the donor.
